Fact 5. 1589 year became the year of revolution in the production of socks, as hosiery knitting machine apeared, capable to make to 1200 loops per minute. It is considered the "father" of English cleric William Lee. However, Elizabeth I didn’t like the invention, which considered that the machine produces "gross and thick socks for commoners”. Despite this, William Lee’s invention quickly gained popularity. Socks became available to even the poorest.

Fact 6. Only after 1815 the year men's stockings was shortened to socks.

Fact 7. After the first world war, socks became made of cheaper materials. During this period they acquired its modern look. In addition, women also began massively wear short stockings.

Fact 8. In Finland in the town of Naantali almost the entire population is engaged in producing socks. Most masters are hereditary knitters.
